In the past, people used this song for happy times. It was a festive song for New Year celebrations. It was even used by samurai.

The music has changed over time. In 1869, a man named John William Fenton made a melody. But people found it hard to sing. In 1880, a new melody was chosen. This version used a style of Japanese court music. It also used Western styles. A man named Franz Eckert helped make the version used today.
