The name means "Chosen Land." Julián Felipe wrote the music in 1898. He made it a march. It was first played at a big event in Kawit, Cavite. This was the day the country declared independence.

Later, a writer named José Palma wrote a poem called "Filipinas." These words became the lyrics for the anthem. The song has changed over many years. It was once sung in Spanish. Then, it was sung in English. Today, people sing it in the national language.

There were hard times for this song. In 1907, a law stopped people from playing it. One whole band even went to prison for playing it! They wanted to show pride for their land. Now, the song is protected by law. People sing it to show love for their home. It is a very important part of life in the Philippines.
