A chant is a special way of speaking or singing. People repeat words or sounds over and over. Sometimes a chant uses only one or two main pitches. These notes are called reciting tones. Some chants are very simple. Other chants have complex musical parts. These parts often repeat small musical phrases. You might hear this in Gregorian chant. This can be speech or music. It can also be a stylized form of speech.

Many people use chanting as a spiritual practice. It can be a way to pray. People might chant by themselves. Others may chant together in a group. Many different traditions use chant to grow spiritually. For example, some use a mantra. A mantra is a sacred word or sound. Others chant the name of God or a spirit. This practice helps people connect to their beliefs. It is a very common way to show devotion.

Chant has a long and deep history. In the Late Middle Ages, some religious chants changed. They evolved into songs. This helped form the roots of Western music. Many old cultures have their own ways to chant. You can find chant in African traditions. It is also found in Hawaiian and Native American cultures. Assyrian and Australian Aboriginal groups use it too. Even Germanic paganism has examples of chant in its myths.

Different places have very unique ways to chant. In the Theravada tradition, people chant in Pali. They often read from the Pāli Canon. Tibetan Buddhist chant uses a style called throat singing. In this style, one person makes many pitches at once. In India, the bhakti tradition uses kirtan. The Hare Krishna movement chants Sanskrit names of God. They sing from the Dan tien. This is the lower abdomen. It is seen as a place of power.

Chant connects to many things you might know. You might hear people chanting at a football game. Some people sing sea shanties on sailing ships. These are rhythmic work songs. You might even know skipping-rope rhymes. These are also types of chants. Religious groups like Roman Catholics use psalms. Eastern Orthodox churches use Byzantine chant.
