Song

arts Maturity 7-9 Next article →

A song is a musical piece made by the human voice. The voice carries a melody, which is a set of distinct pitches. These pitches move in patterns of sound and silence. Many songs use lyrics, which are words written specifically for the music.

A song might follow a structure like the ABA form. This means some sections repeat or change slightly later on. Some songs are sung without any instruments at all. This style is called a cappella.

There are many ways to perform a song. A singer might perform alone or with a group. A soloist might have a backing band or a single pianist. In jazz, a singer might work with a small combo. This could be a trio or a quartet. Large groups of voices singing together in harmony are called choral works. These can be sung by an SATB choir. Sometimes they are sung by all-male or all-female groups. These are called part songs.

History shows us many different types of song traditions. Art songs come from many European countries. They often use poetry and need great vocal skill. German-speaking communities call these "Kunstlied" to separate them from folk songs. Long ago, troubadours and bards sang romantic songs in Europe. These traditions led to the art songs we know today. Some early art songs are found in the music of Henry Purcell. These songs often grew from religious or romantic traditions.

Different genres offer many unique sounds and styles. Folk songs are often learned by ear and passed down orally. They are a major part of a culture's identity. Popular songs are made for the mass market. These include many styles like rock, blues, and soul. Some popular songs are called torch songs or ballads. There are also very fast songs called patter songs. These use many quick notes for each syllable. They are common in comic operas like those by Gilbert and Sullivan.

Songs connect to many parts of our lives. They appear in theatre, such as opera, and in films. They can be recorded in a studio or performed live. Some songs even celebrate sports, like fox hunting or horse racing. A famous hunting song is "D'ye ken John Peel." It was included in The National Song Book in 1906. Even instrumental music is sometimes called a song. For example, 19th-century piano pieces are called "Songs Without Words." Music is a way for people to share stories and feelings.
