Christmas music

arts Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Christmas music is a special group of songs heard during the holiday season. It includes many different styles of music. Some pieces are purely instrumental, which means they have no words at all. Many songs are called carols. These often tell stories about the birth of Jesus Christ. Other carols might talk about gift-giving or characters like Santa Claus. Some songs simply focus on winter themes or seasonal feelings.

You can hear this music in many places. People play it in churches, shopping malls, and on city streets. Some radio stations play Christmas music all day and night. This often starts near Veterans Day in the United States. Some stations even start playing it right after Halloween. This early start is sometimes called "Christmas creep."

There are many ways people share these songs. In the past, groups called wassailers traveled from house to house. They sang carols to neighbors to ask for gifts. In England, town musicians called "waits" were licensed to collect money in the streets. This tradition of singing for charity grew during the seventeenth century. In some places like India, church members still go door to door. They sing carols and the money they receive goes to help the poor.

These musical traditions help bring people together through shared stories and kindness.

The history of these songs goes back a very long time. Some music from the Christmas season began in Rome during the fourth century. By the 13th century, people started singing carols in their own local languages. In 1426, a man named John Awdlay wrote down twenty-five carols in English. Some very old songs like "God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen" are still sung today. During the 1600s, the government in England actually tried to ban Christmas music. They thought the celebrations were wrong. However, people continued to sing their carols in secret.

When the monarchy was restored in 1660, public singing became popular again.

Many famous songs and albums were made in more recent history. During the Great Depression, many popular songs from the U.S. were written. These songs focused more on holiday customs than on religious stories. Some were for children, like "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer." Others were sentimental songs for adults. "White Christmas" became the best-selling single of all time. Elvis Presley also made history with his 1957 album, "Elvis' Christmas Album." It is the best-selling Christmas album ever, with over 20 million copies sold.

Christmas music also includes very grand pieces of classical music. Famous composers like Johann Sebastian Bach wrote many works for the season. His "Christmas Oratorio" tells the story of the birth of Jesus. Other composers like George Frideric Handel wrote famous works like "Messiah." While "Messiah" was originally for Easter, it is a regular part of Christmas concerts now. You can also find beautiful music written for choirs and instruments in churches. These songs are part of a huge collection of music used for holiday services.
