Most people imagine them as tiny humanoids. They often wear red or green clothes. Many stories say they have large, pointy ears. They also wear pointy hats. Some stories show them as furry mammals with tails. These helpers work in a workshop. They often make toys for children. Some elves also take care of the reindeer. In newer stories, they might even help with high-tech toys. They might prepare computers, video games, or mobile phones for delivery.

Elves have a very long history in old stories. The word elf comes from the "álfar" in Ancient Norse mythology. This folklore is much older than the Christmas characters we know. Elves also come from Germanic mythology. In different parts of Europe, people believed in similar beings. For example, Germany had kobolds. Scotland had house spirits called brownies. In medieval Europe, people sometimes thought elves were bad. They were sometimes linked to demons.

Many books helped create the modern idea of elves. In 1823, a poem called "A Visit from St. Nicholas" was written. It is often linked to Clement Clarke Moore. This poem called Saint Nicholas a "jolly old elf." In the 1800s, the magazine "Godey's Lady's Book" showed elves in a workshop. Their 1873 Christmas issue had a picture of Santa with elves. This magazine was very important for Christmas traditions. In 1876, Austin Thompson wrote about the "House of Santa Claus." These books helped people see elves as Santa's helpers.

Movies and TV shows show elves in many ways.

The 1932 Disney film "Santa's Workshop" used traditional animation. In 1964, the "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer" special used stop-motion animation. These elves wore colorful outfits like blue or pink. The 1994 film "The Santa Clause" showed elves as children or teenagers. An actor named David Krumholtz played the number one elf, Bernard. In the 2003 film "Elf," actors used forced perspective to look small. The 2018 film "The Christmas Chronicles" used computer graphics. Those elves were two feet tall and had hairy tails.

Different parts of the world have different helpers. In the Netherlands and Belgium, Saint Nicholas has a companion named Zwarte Piet. In Germany, the helpers are called Knecht Ruprecht. In Luxembourg, they are known as Hoesecker. In Nordic countries, people call them nisser. These nisser are like elves but usually wear only red. These different names show how many ways people think about holiday helpers. Many of these stories still connect to old fairy tales. One famous tale is "The Elves and the Shoemaker" from 1812.
