It is different from art music, which is often played from written notes. Most popular songs have melodies that are easy to sing along to. These songs often use a specific pattern of parts. The verse tells a story with different words each time. The chorus, or refrain, repeats the same words and tune. A bridge is a special part that sounds different to connect the others.

Many different styles make up this wide world of music. Some people call it "pop music," but that is usually just one specific type. Music can be used to express many feelings. Some styles, like jazz or rhythm and blues, are about expression. Other styles, like country or gospel, are written by the people for the people. Even some music, like hip-hop or punk rock, helps people stand up for what they believe.

Later, new inventions changed everything. The gramophone allowed people to hear recorded music. Radio and television also helped singers become known all over the country.

In the 1900s, player pianos could play recorded piano pieces. From the 1960s to the mid-2000s, people mostly listened to full albums. This was known as the album era. Today, we use digital sound files to share music. This makes it very easy for a song to travel from one country to another.

For example, styles from the West can mix with local traditions in Africa or Indonesia. These are called hybrid styles. This mixing helps create a global culture that everyone can share. Whether it is a local song or a global hit, music reflects what people care about at that time. It is a way for people to find their own identity.
