People use many different tools to listen to them. Some people enjoy the feel of vinyl records. Others use compact discs, which are shiny plastic circles. You might also use audio tapes like cassettes. Today, many people use digital streaming through the internet. This allows people to hear music from all over the world.

Listening to an album is a popular way to enjoy music.

Making an album is a very careful job. Most artists work inside a recording studio. These rooms are built to absorb sound so there is no extra echo.

Artists often record many different takes of the same song. They might record different parts of a track separately. Then, they use a process called mixing to bring everything together. Sometimes, artists record in a concert venue or even at home. If they record everything in one go without extra layers, it is called a "live" recording.

Long ago, the word "album" meant something very different. In ancient Rome, it was a white board used for public notices. Later, it meant a book with blank pages for sketches or photos.

In the early 1900s, music albums looked like real photo books. They held several small 78 rpm records inside. Each side of those records only held about three minutes of sound. By 1938, companies hired designers to make colorful covers. This made the artwork on the front a very important part of the album.

Technology changed how we store music over the years. In 1948, Columbia Records introduced the long-playing or LP record.

These vinyl records could hold about 22 minutes of music on each side. This made the LP the main way to listen to albums for a long time. Later, 8-track tapes became popular from 1965 until 1983.

Then, cassette tapes became very popular in the late 1980s. In the early 2000s, compact discs became the main way to buy music.

Albums come in many different sizes and shapes. An album is made of individual pieces called tracks.

Some albums have many songs, while others have very few. For example, the album Dopesmoker has only one track that lasts over 63 minutes. If an album is too big for one disc, it might be a double or triple album. Some collections even include extra songs called bonus tracks. These might be live versions or older recordings that were not on the original release.
