Long ago, albums looked like big books.

These books held many small 78 rpm records. Each record could only hold about three minutes of sound. In 1948, a new type of record came out. It was called a long-playing (LP) record. LPs could hold much more music on each side.

Most albums are made in a recording studio. Artists record many takes to get the sound just right. They might record different parts of a song separately. Then, they mix them all together. Some albums have extra songs called bonus tracks. These might be live songs or old demos. An album can have many tracks. Some albums have only one very long track! Even with new technology, albums remain a special way to share music.
