For many Christians, attending church services is a very important part of the season. The Lutheran Church calls Christmas a Festival, and the Roman Catholic Church calls it a Solemnity. In the United Kingdom, the Church of England also celebrates these special days. A 2010 survey showed that six in ten Americans attend church during this time.

Decorating homes and churches is a long-standing tradition. In 15th-century London, people used green plants like ivy and holly to decorate. Ivy was used to symbolize Jesus coming to Earth. Holly was used to represent the Crown of Thorns and the blood of Jesus.

People also use specific colors like red, green, and gold. Red symbolizes the blood of Jesus, while green represents eternal life. Gold was the first color used because it represents royalty. Many people also hang mistletoe, which is an evergreen plant with white berries.

They were made popular by Saint Francis of Assisi starting in 1223. Different countries have their own special ways of making them. In Poland, people make colorful Kraków szopka scenes that look like historical buildings. In southern France, people use small clay figures called santons. Some people in Sicily even use living people for their nativity scenes.

Many families also decorate a Christmas tree in their homes. This custom started with German Lutherans in the 16th century. In 1539, a tree was even placed in the Cathedral of Strassburg.

People often put a star or an angel on the very top. A star can represent the Star of Bethlehem. In the United States, the custom became common by the 1870s. The phrase "Christmas tree" was first recorded in the English language in 1835.

Music and special services bring people together during the holidays. Some traditions include singing Christmas carols or watching nativity plays.
