Most people use a conifer like a spruce, pine, or fir. Some people choose an artificial tree that looks real. These trees bring a sense of joy and togetherness to a home. People often place a star or an angel at the very top. The star can represent the Star of Bethlehem from the Nativity story. An angel might represent the angel Gabriel.

Decorating the tree is a special way to show skill and creativity. People use many different kinds of ornaments to make it look bright. You might see shiny baubles, colorful garlands, or sparkly tinsel. Some people use candy canes or other sweets for decoration. Edible treats like gingerbread and chocolate are often tied to branches with ribbons. In the past, people used paper roses, apples, and wafers.

Today, many people use electric lights to make the tree glow.

The history of the tree begins in Central Europe.

This includes places like Germany and Livonia, which is now Estonia and Latvia. The custom grew from the traditions of Protestant Christians. Some people believe Martin Luther helped create the modern tradition. He is said to have added lighted candles to an evergreen tree. In 1521, trees were hung in St. George's Church in Sélestat. By 1539, a tree was placed in the Cathedral of Strasbourg.

Many different cultures have their own unique ways of celebrating.

In Poland, people once hung a branch called a podlaznik from the ceiling. They decorated these branches with nuts, acorns, and straw stars. In Slovenia, people sometimes hung trees upside-down or near a well. In the 1800s, the custom spread to royal courts in places like Russia and Austria. The duchesse d'Orléans introduced the tree to France in 1840. In Denmark, a tree was lit as early as 1808.

These traditions connect to many old stories and customs.

Some people link the tree to the "tree of paradise" used in old plays. Others see connections to the Yule-tree or even the Norse tree Yggdrasil. In some places, people decorated branches to scare away the devil. Even today, the tree remains a symbol of culture and faith. Some displays are truly huge, like the light display on Mount Ingino in Italy. It is sometimes called the tallest Christmas tree in the world.
