Most Christian groups use this time to get ready for Christmas. They focus on the birth of Jesus in Bethlehem. They also look forward to his future return to the world. The name Advent comes from a Latin word. This word means "coming" or "arrival."

It is the start of the religious year for many Western Christians.

There are many ways people observe this season. Some use Advent calendars to count the days until Christmas. Others light candles on an Advent wreath.

Some people use a Christingle or decorate a Chrismon tree. Many churches use specific colors for their services. Violet is a very common color used since the 13th century. On Gaudete Sunday, a rose-colored candle is lit to show joy.

Some groups even use blue to show hope.

History tells us that Advent has changed over many centuries. It was likely around in the year 480. In the year 567, a group called the Council of Tours told monks to fast in December. A leader named Saint Perpetuus once directed people to fast three times a week.

Because of this, people sometimes called it "St. Martin's Lent." In the 9th century, writings say people still fasted under Charlemagne. Later, the rules changed to start after the feast of Saint Andrew.

Different churches follow different calendars for these dates. In many places, Advent starts on the fourth Sunday before Christmas. This Sunday usually falls between November 27 and December 3. The Roman Catholic Church has different rules for its rites. The Ambrosian Rite starts Advent on the sixth Sunday before Christmas. This means it begins between November 13 and November 19.

These dates help everyone stay on track for the holiday.

Music and art also help people feel the spirit of Advent. Many churches hold special events like singing "Nine Lessons and Carols."

Famous composers like Johann Sebastian Bach wrote music for this time. Some songs use special words called antiphons. These words are used in many popular hymns. Even the way music is played changes during this season. For example, the Gloria is often left out to make Christmas feel even more new.
