The liturgical year is a special calendar used by many Christian churches. It is also called the church year or the ecclesiastical calendar. This cycle of days helps people know when to celebrate feast days. It also tells them which parts of the Bible to read.

Different seasons have their own moods and ways of praying. Churches use special colors to show these seasons. These colors appear on cloths called paraments. They are also seen on the clothes worn by clergy.

Many churches use a list called a lectionary to guide their readings. This list tells them which scripture passages to read each Sunday. After the Protestant Reformation, Anglicans and Lutherans used the Roman Rite lectionary. The Catholic Church later changed its lectionary in 1969. They started using a three-year cycle for Sundays. They also use a two-year cycle for weekdays. In 1994, many Protestant groups began using the Revised Common Lectionary.

In the East Syriac tradition, the year follows the life of Jesus. This is called the flow of salvation history. The year is divided into seasons that are about seven weeks long. One old record of this is a 14th-century manuscript. It is called the 'Preface to Hudra' by Rabban Brick-Iso.

The year starts with a season called Subara. This season begins just before December. It ends with the feast of Epiphany. During this time, people may fast for 25 days to prepare for Christmas.

Another important time is the Great Fast, or Sawma Rabba. This season starts 50 days before Easter. It helps people think about the life of Jesus. People might avoid meat, fish, or eggs during this time. In the past, some Indian Nasranis only ate once a day during this fast. The most important feast is the Resurrection. This is the season of Qyamta. It celebrates Jesus' victory over death.

It lasts for seven weeks and includes the Feast of Ascension.

There are also seasons for the Apostles and for summer. The weeks of Slihe start on Pentecost. This season remembers how the early church began. It also celebrates the gifts of the Holy Spirit. After that comes the season of Qaita. Qaita means summer in the Syriac language. This is a time of harvest for the church. It celebrates the growth and holiness of the faith.
