Christian liturgy is a special pattern for worship.

It is used by many different Christian groups on a regular basis. The word liturgy comes from a Greek word meaning "public work." This is because people come together to perform a service for God. Many denominations hold their main service on Sunday. They call this day the Lord's Day. Some groups also hold services every single day. This can include praying the canonical hours. They might also offer Eucharistic liturgies like the Mass.

There are many different types of these services. One major kind is called a communion liturgy. These services celebrate the Eucharist.

In the Roman Catholic Church, this is called the Mass. The word comes from the Latin word Missa. This was taken from the words used at the end of the service. In the Eastern Orthodox Church, they call it the Divine Liturgy. Some Syriac churches call it the Holy Qurbana. This name means "Holy Offering." Lutheran churches in Europe often use the word Mass too. In North America, Lutherans might say Divine Service or Holy Communion.

Many services share common parts and steps.

A service might start with a procession of a cross. Then people might use the Sign of the Cross. They often sing hymns, psalms, or chants. There are special readings from the Bible. These often end with a reading from the Gospels. People may say the Creed or the Lord's Prayer. They might also offer incense or pray for leaders. A big part is the Eucharist. During this, a priest says a prayer called an anaphora. This prayer asks God to make the bread and wine sacred.

History shows these patterns have deep roots. The Bible mentions morning and evening worship. This helped families honor the Lord's Day. In the book of Exodus, God commanded daily offerings. These were made in the morning and at twilight. Psalm 92 also talks about giving thanks to God. It mentions singing praises in the morning and at night. An early church figure named Eusebius of Caesarea wrote about this. He said it was a sign of God's power. He noted that hymns are sent up to God all over the earth.

Some people also practice the Divine Office. This is a way to mark the hours of the day with prayer.

In the Western Catholic Church, this is the Liturgy of the Hours. There were once eight different hours for prayer. These included Matins, Lauds, Prime, Terce, Sext, None, Vespers, and Compline. In monasteries, Matins was often held before dawn. Compline was said right before bedtime. Anglican churches often use Morning Prayer and Evening Prayer. The Byzantine Rite also has a daily cycle of seven services. These help people keep their faith throughout the entire day.
