A spiritual practice is a regular set of actions. People do these things to grow their spirit. Many religions use the idea of a path. They say these actions move a person toward a goal. This goal might be called salvation or liberation. Some people call those on this path wayfarers or pilgrims.

These practices help people feel closer to what they believe in.

Different faiths have many ways to work on this. In Islam, Muslims perform ritual prayer called salat. They may also fast or go on the Hajj. Some groups, like Sufis, use special movements. This can include Sufi whirling or Dhikr. In Buddhism, people use a term called bhavana for this growth. Zen Buddhists might practice zazen meditation. They also find spirit in tea ceremonies or painting.

History shows many different groups have shaped these ideas. Jewish traditions include studying the Torah or observing Shabbat. The Musar movement uses chanting and meditation. In Christianity, some follow the teachings of Ignatius of Loyola. A writer named Richard Foster wrote about Christian disciplines. He said meditation fills the mind with God. He did not say it empties the mind.

Many specific rules and names exist in these traditions. In Hinduism, the practice is called sādhanā. People might use Japa to repeat a mantra. There are four types of yoga mentioned in Hindu texts. These are Jnana, Bhakti, Karma, and Raja Yoga. In the Baháʼí Faith, prayer is a very important law. Some people also practice Reiki. This was started by a Japanese monk named Mikao Usui.

Spiritual practices can also be found in philosophy. The Cyrenaics used negative visualization to help them. The Stoics saw philosophy as a way of life. They might keep a journal or think about death. This helps them stay in the present moment. Some people even see martial arts as spiritual. This includes arts like Tai Chi or Aikido. These different ways show how people seek meaning.
