Secularity

philosophy religion Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Secularity is the state of being neutral toward religion. It describes things that are not tied to a specific faith. Some people think it means being against religion. However, many experts say it just means being neutral.

This idea helps us sort different parts of life. For example, eating and bathing are usually secular activities. They are just normal parts of a daily routine. But some religious traditions see these acts as sacred. In those views, even eating can be a religious act.

The word has a long history in the Latin language. It originally meant a period of about one hundred years. In the Bible, the word was used to talk about time. It could mean the coming and going of ages. In the Middle Ages, the church used a special term. They called certain priests "secular clergy." These priests worked in specific areas of the land. They were not part of the groups of monks.

This concept is a Western idea. It grew out of Western history and Christian thought. Because of this, not all cultures use these same words. Many cultures do not see a split between religion and life. They might not have a word for "secular" at all. Some groups focus more on rituals than on personal beliefs. In these places, the idea of a divide does not exist.

Some thinkers have looked closely at how these ideas work. An anthropologist named Jack David Eller studied this topic. He said secularity is not the same as being anti-religious. Instead, it is about being religiously neutral. Many activities within a religious group are still secular. This means secularity does not always lead to a loss of faith.

A philosopher named Charles Taylor wrote a book in 2007. His book is titled "A Secular Age." He has a unique way of looking at this. He says secularity is like a backdrop for all of life. In a secular society, belief is no longer the only option. People know there are many different ways to see the world. This makes every belief feel different to the person holding it.
