Secularization

society Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Secularization is a big idea in sociology. It describes a change in how a society works. This change moves people from a religious way of life to a more worldly one.

It does not always mean people stop believing in God. Instead, it often means religion has less power in public life. Religion might become a private matter for each person. This means faith stays with the individual rather than ruling the whole community.

This change happens in many different ways. Some experts say it happens through differentiation. This is when different parts of society, like law or politics, become separate from religion. Other times, it happens through the transfer of tasks. For example, a government might take over social services that a church used to run.

One way it works is by changing how people think about the world. People might look for science to explain things instead of using religious stories. This can make religious authority feel smaller in daily life.

Many thinkers have studied why this happens. Long ago, thinkers like Karl Marx and Max Weber looked at how modern life changed things. Max Weber called this the "disenchantment of the world." He meant that science and reason were replacing old magical or religious views.

Other people, like Christian Smith, have different ideas. He thinks that smart leaders might promote these changes to gain more influence. He suggests that some intellectuals might even turn away from their own cultures.

History shows many moments of this change. In the 1500s, King Henry VIII in England took land away from monasteries. This was a form of secularization where church property became civil property. Later, during the French Revolution in the 1700s, similar things happened.

In more recent times, researchers have seen different patterns. In 1999, Peter L. Berger used the word "desecularization." He used it to describe how religion can grow back, like in Iran or Russia. Between 2010 and 2020, the share of people without a religion grew from 23.3% to 24.2%.

Understanding secularization helps us see how the world is changing. It shows that the link between religion and the world is not simple. Many people who say they are not religious still follow religious habits.

This means the ideas of "secular" and "religion" are not always opposites. They can exist in the same place at the same time. Even in Europe, the trends are mixed and do not follow one single path. The world is a complex place where old traditions and new ideas meet.
