Atheism is the position of not believing in a god. It is a very complex topic to study. Many people are part of this group, but they are hard to count. This is because words like "atheism" do not always mean the same thing in every culture. In some places, the word might not even exist in the local language. Also, some people might feel shy about their beliefs. They may worry about facing unfair treatment or social stigma. Because of this, they might not say they are atheists in a survey.

Researchers use many different ways to try to find the truth. They often look at how many people are "unaffiliated" with a religion. This includes atheists and also agnostics, who are people who are not sure about gods. Sometimes, people do not believe in a god but still have other spiritual beliefs. For example, some people in the Netherlands believe in things like reincarnation. Others might believe in telepathy or life after death. This makes it tricky to draw a clear line between being religious and being non-religious.

These ideas have been around for a very long time. Some of the first atheist ideas appeared in ancient Indian thought. They existed even during the times of ancient Hinduism. In Western history, these ideas have roots in Greek philosophy. However, atheism did not become a clear, distinct view until the late Enlightenment period. Today, people find new ways to build communities. Some even join "atheist churches" to meet others and help their neighbors.

Numbers about these groups change depending on the study. In 2006, one estimate said there were 500 to 750 million people without a belief in a deity. Another study in 2013 found about 450 to 500 million atheists and agnostics. A large number of these people live in Asia and the Pacific. In fact, 76% of the global non-religious population lives in that region. China is a major part of this, with 200 million people in that group as of 2013.

Different countries have very different levels of atheism. Some countries have very high numbers of people who do not follow a religion. Sweden and Vietnam are near the top of these lists. Other places, like parts of Africa and South America, have much lower numbers. It is also interesting to see how people identify themselves. In the United States, many people say they have "nothing in particular" for a religion. This shows that even when people do not believe in a god, they might choose different words to describe their lives.
