This article covers sensitive topics: religion. Parents can manage visibility in Parental Controls.

A blasphemy law is a rule that forbids insulting a deity or sacred objects. These laws aim to stop people from showing contempt for things considered holy. Some laws protect the beliefs of a majority group in a country. Other laws are made to protect the religious beliefs of smaller groups. These rules can cover speech, writing, or even certain actions. They might stop the vilification or defamation of a religion and its followers.

How these laws work can vary quite a bit between different places. Some laws only punish speech that is meant to insult rather than critique. Human rights experts often study how to balance these rules with freedom of speech. They want to make sure laws do not restrict people too much. For example, international rules say countries should stop speech that causes religious hatred or violence. However, experts say these protections must be very carefully managed. They do not usually support banning blasphemy itself.

History shows that these laws have existed for a very long time. In France, the idea of blasphemy was part of the law in the 13th century. King Louis IX set very harsh punishments for it in 1254. Later, the French Revolution helped remove these ideas from the law in 1791. In Australia, laws arrived from England in the 1780s. Australia had the Blasphemy Act 1697 as part of its early legal system. The federal government eventually removed these laws in 1995.

Many different countries have unique rules regarding religion today. In Austria, breaking religious peace can lead to a fine or six months in prison. Brazil has a law where vilifying religious objects can lead to prison time. Canada had a law called blasphemous libel until it was repealed in 2018. In Denmark, a law was removed in 2017 but was brought back in 2023. This new rule bans the improper treatment of significant religious writings in public.

These laws connect to how we think about freedom and respect. In Finland, people have been fined for books or art that touched on holy topics. This happened to the writer Hannu Salama in 1964. The artist Harro Koskinen was also prosecuted for his paintings in 1969. These stories show how laws can change what people are allowed to say. Today, many people continue to debate where respect ends and free speech begins.
