An insult is a way to be disrespectful or mean to someone.

People often use insults to make others feel small or sad. These can be done on purpose to hurt someone's feelings. Sometimes, people might even use insults to try to make someone look bad in front of others. However, insults can also happen by accident. You might say something about a person's music or clothes without meaning to be rude.

Even small things, like walking away from someone, can feel like an insult to the person left behind.

There are many different ways that insults can be shared. Some are called backhanded compliments. These are tricky because they sound nice at first. A person might say, "I did not expect you to ace that exam." This sounds like praise, but it actually suggests the person was just lucky. Other insults are called personal attacks. These focus on a person's character or how honest they are. In the United States, the Communications Act of 1934 even had rules about these kinds of attacks. Some people also use insults as a way to try to control others' emotions.

History shows that people have used insults in many ways. In ancient Rome, politicians used very harsh words during their debates. This was a common part of how they talked about government. Even religious teachings talk about this topic. Buddhism teaches a concept called "Right Speech." Christianity also teaches about managing anger and not judging others. One very strange event happened in the year 897 AD. A leader named Pope Stephen VI held a trial for a man named Pope Formosus.

Even though Formosus was dead, Stephen VI had his body dressed and put on a throne to stand trial.

Sometimes, people use insults just for fun or as a game. In Scotland, during the 15th and 16th centuries, people held contests called flyting. In these contests, two people would trade insults using poems. There is also an old Norse style of poetry called Senna. Even the famous composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart used silly, mocking humor for fun. Today, we see similar things in rap battles and comedy shows. We also see it in "roasts" where people make jokes about each other. Even cartoon characters, like Skeletor from Masters of the Universe, use funny insults.

What counts as an insult can change depending on where you are. The same words might be mean in one place but funny in another. For example, a joke between a husband and wife might be different from a joke between strangers. Experts like Desmond Morris have studied how people use signals to show they are bored or unimpressed. In the past, people in England even studied different types of facial expressions used to mock others. William Shakespeare even wrote about different levels of insults in his plays. Whether they are spoken, written, or shown through a look, insults are a big part of how humans interact.
