An insult is a way to be mean to someone.

People might use insults to be rude or to make someone feel small. Sometimes, people insult others on purpose. Other times, they do it by accident. For example, you might accidentally hurt a friend's feelings by making a joke about their music.

History shows that insults have been around for a long time. In ancient Rome, leaders used harsh words during political debates. In the year 897 AD, a leader named Pope Stephen VI did something very strange. He held a trial for a dead man named Pope Formosus. He even put the body on a throne to stand trial.

Some insults are hidden. A backhanded compliment sounds nice but is actually mean. One person might say, "I did not expect you to pass that test." This makes it sound like the person was just lucky. Other people use insults for fun. In Scotland, people used to have contests called flyting. They would trade insults using poems. Today, people do this in rap battles or comedy shows.
