Scandals often happen because of greed or the abuse of power. They can also happen because of lust. Sometimes, a scandal starts when people find out about a secret. These secrets might involve breaking laws or moral rules. A scandal can be about politics, art, or even books. It can also be about sex or sports. Sometimes, a scandal is based on facts. Other times, it is based on false claims. Sometimes, it is a mix of both.

People often work to reveal the truth about wrongdoing. These people are called whistleblowers. They find bad things happening inside a group. One famous whistleblower was William Mark Felt. He was known as "Deep Throat." He helped reveal the Watergate scandal in the 1970s. This happened in the United States. Whistleblowers may have laws to protect them. These laws help them share information about misdeeds. This helps keep organizations honest.

Scandals have happened in many different places. In the 1950s, American quiz shows had a big scandal. Shows like "The $64,000 Question" were popular. Some contestants and producers worked together to rig the shows. This means they fixed the results. In 1958, a New York grand jury looked into this. Later, the US Congress made rigging a quiz show a federal crime. In business, Michael Woodford was a CEO at Olympus. He was a whistleblower in 2012. He exposed a financial scandal worth $1.7 billion.

Sports also face many scandals. Some athletes use drugs to win. This is called doping. The World Anti-Doping Agency works to fight this. They monitor sports to stop bribery and doping. One famous case involved Lance Armstrong. He was a road cycling champion in America. He used cheating to win for a long time. There was also a big corruption case in 2015 with FIFA. These events show how hard it is to keep things fair. Today, mass media spreads news of scandals very quickly.
