Honour is a special quality that describes how a person acts. It can mean being brave, honest, or kind to others. It is also about how much respect people have for you. This respect can belong to a single person. It can also belong to a group, like a school or a nation.

People are often judged by how well they follow a code of honour. This code helps decide if they are worthy or respectable in their community.

In many societies, honour works as a set of unwritten rules. These rules tell people how to behave within their social group. A code of honour is different from a legal code. Laws are written down and enforced by a government. Honour is often felt or understood without being written in a book. For example, in the early medieval period, a leader's honour was tied to their land. If they said, "on my honour," they were promising their estates as a guarantee.

History shows that honour has changed over a long time. Many years ago, honour was a very important part of daily life. In the modern West, many people now use their own conscience to make choices. Instead of following social honour, people follow the rule of law. However, some groups still use a code of honour today. The military and Scouting organisations both use special courts to talk about honour. These groups use it to teach duty and high standards to their members.

Honour can also be connected to a person's reputation. In places without strong courts, having a good reputation is very important. It helps people trust each other during business deals. If someone breaks a promise, they might lose their honour. This can lead to people refusing to work with them. In some cultures, people even used duels to settle arguments about honour. They used physical skill to prove they were right.

Sometimes, honour can lead to very serious conflicts. In the United States, the War of 1812 was partly caused by national honour. Many Americans felt that Britain was not treating their new country with respect. They wanted to protect their nation's reputation on the world stage. This desire for honour helped shape how many people felt about the war. Honour can also apply to a whole family. If one person acts badly, it can affect the standing of their relatives. This shows how deeply honour can touch many different parts of life.
