People often use different words for it. In British English, they might say "valour." In American English, they often say "valor." There are two main ways to show it. Physical courage means being brave during pain or a threat to life. Moral courage is the ability to do what is right even when others disagree or when you feel shame.

Some thinkers also use the word "fortitude." This word includes being patient and never giving up.

Professor Daniel Putman explains how courage works using fear and confidence. He says courage is a deliberate choice made for a worthy goal. It is not about having no fear at all. Instead, the ideal is to judge a situation and use reason to guide your actions. You must balance your fear with your self-confidence. Fear should match the actual danger of the situation. Confidence should be a realistic belief in your skills and your cause.

If these two feelings are not balanced, courage can be distorted.

Many different cultures and thinkers have studied this idea for a long time. In Ancient Greece, Plato wrote about courage in his work called *Laches*. He also described it as a way to persevere through many emotions. Aristotle believed courage was the middle ground between two extremes. He said the lack of courage is cowardice, while too much is recklessness. In Ancient Rome, the philosopher Cicero listed courage as one of the four main virtues. He believed a courageous spirit needed to be guided by wisdom and reason.

Different traditions around the world offer their own views on bravery. The *Tao Te Ching* from the Eastern tradition says that courage comes from love. In the Hindu tradition, the *Manusmṛti* lists courage and patience as important traits. Islamic beliefs also see courage as a key factor in facing challenges. Many followers find strength in the examples of the Prophets. Even in the West, thinkers like Thomas Hobbes saw courage as a way for individuals to ensure their own survival.

These different views show how much people value this quality.

Modern writers have also shared famous thoughts on what it means to be brave. Ernest Hemingway called it "grace under pressure." Winston Churchill said it is the first of all human qualities. Maya Angelou believed courage is the most important virtue of all. She said you cannot practice any other virtue consistently without it. C.S. Lewis even said that courage is the form of every virtue at its testing point. These ideas show that courage is not just about fighting, but about how we live our lives.
