A duel is a formal fight between two people. They use weapons that are matched to each other.

In the past, people often used swords like the rapier. Later on, many people started using pistols instead. Most duels were based on a code of honor. This meant people fought to show they were brave. They wanted to prove they were willing to risk their lives. This was called gaining "satisfaction" for their honor.

In the Middle Ages, duels had different rules and forms. One type was called a judicial duel. Knights and squires used these to settle legal disputes.

They might use longswords or other heavy weapons. Some knights even wore full plate armor to protect themselves. These fights lasted until one person could no longer fight. Sometimes, the person who lost was even executed. Another type was a chivalric combat called a passage of arms. Knights would wait at places like bridges or city gates. If a traveler did not fight, they might face humiliation.

During the Renaissance, dueling became a way for gentlemen to show status. It was a common way to settle arguments in Europe.

However, many leaders tried to stop it. The Catholic Church was also against dueling. In France, King Louis XIII made dueling illegal in 1626. His successor, Louis XIV, tried even harder to end the practice. Still, many people continued to duel anyway. Between 1685 and 1716, French officers fought about 10,000 duels. This led to more than 400 deaths during that time.

In America, dueling was also a part of life for many.

A very famous duel happened in 1804. This was when Alexander Hamilton died fighting Aaron Burr. The U.S. Navy also lost many officers to dueling. Between 1798 and the Civil War, they lost many to duels. In England, the rules changed around 1770. People there began to use pistols much more than swords. They also used "seconds" to help manage the fight. These were friends who tried to settle the argument first. If they could not, the seconds would oversee the duel.

By the 1800s, the way people thought about honor began to change. New ideas about politeness and civil behavior became popular.

Many people felt that dueling was a violent relic of the past. They believed that fighting was not suited for modern life. In England, the middle class began using newspapers to defend their honor. They would write letters to settle disputes instead of fighting. In the United States, leaders like George Washington encouraged officers to refuse challenges. Eventually, public opinion caused dueling to fade away. Most places saw dueling decline by the early 20th century.
