They were skilled fighters who fought while riding in battle. Many knights were vassals who served a powerful lord. To pay them, a lord might give them land holdings. This helped the knight have a place to live and work. This connection to horses is seen in many words today. For example, the word chivalry comes from words meaning a horseman.

The idea may have started with ancient Greeks and Romans. In the early Middle Ages, many warriors were simply mounted fighters. During the time of Charlemagne in the 8th century, knights began to appear. The Franks used many horsemen to help win large conquests. As time passed, these warriors became a specific social class. They were often part of the petty nobility. By the Late Middle Ages, the rank was very much about the code of chivalry.

Many special groups of knights were formed to help others.

Some of these were called military orders. The Knights of the Holy Sepulchre and the Knights Hospitaller were two examples. They were founded to protect pilgrims traveling to the Holy Land. Other groups like the Knights Templar also joined this tradition. These groups were often meant to be monastic orders. This means the members lived like monks while they served as soldiers. They became very powerful during the time of the Crusades.

Eventually, the way people fought in wars began to change.

New weapons like the culverin were introduced. These were weapons that used gunpowder to fire. Because of these new tools, heavy armor became less useful. The Holy Roman Emperor Maximilian I lived during this changing time. He is often called the "last knight" because of these shifts. Even though fighting changed, the titles remained in many countries. Today, many different orders of knighthood still exist around the world.
