A knight is a person granted an honorary title of knighthood. This title is conferred by a head of state, a monarch, or a religious leader. It is often given to recognize meritorious achievement or service to a country or the church.

In the past, the title was closely tied to military service. Today, knighthood is a prestigious honor centered on charity and civic service. It is no longer a military role. In the English language, the female equivalent of a knight is a dame.

Historically, the mechanism of knighthood involved a relationship called vassalage. A knight often served as a vassal to a powerful lord. This person acted as an elite fighter or a bodyguard. In exchange for this military service, the lord provided payment in the form of land holdings.

These land grants were known as benefices. These arrangements allowed knights to maintain their equipment and horses. This system helped lords secure the service of skilled warriors for their defense.

The role of the knight changed through several distinct stages. In the Early Middle Ages, knighthood was conferred upon mounted warriors. During the High Middle Ages, the rank became a class of petty nobility. By the Late Middle Ages, the role became associated with chivalry. Chivalry was a specific code of conduct for the perfect courtly Christian warrior.

This era focused on the ideals of being a gentleman and a brave soldier. The knight was no longer just a fighter but a social figure.

History shows that the concept of the knight has deep roots. The idea may have been inspired by the ancient Greek and Roman equestrian classes. In the 8th century, the first knights appeared during the reign of Charlemagne. The Franks used these warriors to help make far-flung conquests possible.

By the 12th century, the rank developed into a formal social class. During the 9th and 10th centuries, local lords became essential for defense against Viking attacks. This period helped entrench the landed warrior class across Europe.

Many famous military orders were established to serve specific religious goals. These groups were often intended to be monastic orders. This meant members lived like monks while acting as soldiers.

The Knights of the Holy Sepulchre and the Knights Hospitaller were founded after the First Crusade of 1099. Other groups included the Order of Saint Lazarus, the Knights Templar, and the Teutonic Knights. These orders were created to protect Christian pilgrims traveling to the Holy Land. They became very powerful during the era of the Crusades.

The importance of the knight is reflected in the evolution of language. The word knight comes from the Old English word "cniht," meaning boy or servant. Over time, this meaning shifted toward "military follower" or "rank of dignity."

The connection to horses is also seen in the word chivalry. This term comes from the French word for horseman. In the Roman era, the term "equestrian" described a high social class of horsemen. These linguistic links show how central the mounted warrior was to society.

New methods of warfare eventually changed the role of the knight. The introduction of the culverin changed everything. A culverin was a gunpowder-fired weapon used against people.

These new weapons began to render classical knights in heavy armor obsolete. Holy Roman Emperor Maximilian I, who ruled from 1459 to 1519, is often called the "last knight." Even after his rule, groups like the Knights Hospitaller fought iconic battles. Today, many orders still exist, such as the English Order of the Garter and the Spanish Order of Santiago. These modern orders continue the tradition of high honor and service.
