Feudalism

history Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Feudalism was a special way of organizing society in medieval Europe. This system flourished from the 9th century to the 15th century. It was built on relationships involving land and service. People used land to create connections with one another. These connections helped people live and work together.

This system worked through a series of important promises. A noble known as a lord held land. He would grant part of that land to a person called a vassal. This piece of land was called a fief. In exchange for the fief, the vassal provided service to the lord. This service was often military help or fighting.

To start this relationship, people held a ceremony called homage. During this event, the vassal made a formal promise to the lord. This was a contract between two people. The vassal promised to fight for the lord when called. The lord promised to protect the vassal from outside threats. The vassal also took an oath of fealty to show loyalty.

Feudalism involved many different groups of people in society. Some historians look at the warrior nobility and their duties. Others include the clergy, who worked for the church. The system also included the peasantry, who lived off their labor. These people were often bound by a system called manorialism. This made it a very broad social structure.

This way of life often began when large empires lost power. For example, the Carolingian Empire lacked the tools to support many soldiers. Lords began to rule over their own lands instead. As European monarchies became stronger, the feudal system slowly faded away. Some people even see similar structures in feudal Japan.
