Medieval commune

history Maturity 9-11 Next article →

A medieval commune was a special group of people. They made a shared promise to protect each other. This promise helped them defend their physical safety. It also helped them protect their traditional freedoms. Members would gather for a public ceremony. There, they swore an oath to keep the peace. They promised to stand together during times of trouble. These groups helped towns act like one single body.

Many things helped these communes start to grow. In the 10th century, peasants moved toward walled towns. They did this because farming was becoming more productive. New farming methods like the three-field system helped. People also wanted to be safe from bandits. They wanted to avoid unfair taxes from local leaders. They worked hard to get special papers called charters. These papers gave them the right to hold markets. Sometimes kings granted these rights to make allies.

Communes appeared at different times in different places. The movement gained strength in the 11th century. Northern Italy had many people living in cities then. By the 12th century, communes spread to France and Germany. They also reached Spain and other lands. In eastern Europe, groups like the Novgorod Republic formed. The Novgorod Republic lasted from 1136 to 1478. The Pskov Republic was another example from that area. These groups helped people manage their own local affairs.

Different communes had different ways of ruling. In many French towns, people chose mayors or consuls. By the year 1300, one in four French urban communities used this. In Spain, people used councils of property owners. Some large towns used law officers to manage land. In the mountains, rural communes helped villagers work together. They shared things like forests, waters, and pastures. These mountain groups helped keep trade roads safe.

Some communes became very powerful over time. In northern Italy, they turned into independent city-states. Milan fought and defeated the Holy Roman Emperors. This happened during battles like the one at Legnano in 1176. Other cities like Venice built huge empires on the sea. Venice even conquered much of the Byzantine Empire in 1204. However, many other communes were eventually absorbed by kings. They changed how people lived and how they were governed.
