The Lombard League was a special group of cities in Northern Italy.

This group formed an alliance to protect its freedom. For a long time, these cities ruled themselves. However, the Holy Roman Emperors wanted to take direct control. They wanted to manage the cities through their own officials. This caused a big struggle between the cities and the empire. The League was important because it helped cities work together.

It was one of the first examples of a confederation in Europe.

To work together, the League used a system of shared power. They had a council called the Regents of Lombardy.

Each city sent representatives to this council. These representatives voted on very important matters. They decided on things like war and peace with the Emperor. They also voted on which new cities could join the League. Over time, the council gained more power. It could collect taxes and make legal rules. The League even created a customs union to help trade work better.

This alliance began after a group called the Veronese League. That earlier group was made in 1164. The Veronese League included Verona, Padua, Vicenza, and Venice. The Lombard League grew much larger after it formed in 1167. Many cities joined the group after an oath at Pontida. These cities included Milan, Cremona, Mantua, and Bologna. Other cities like Genoa, Brescia, and Parma also became members. Even some local lords joined the alliance to support the cities.

History shows many battles between the League and the emperors. Emperor Frederick I Barbarossa fought against the cities for many years. In 1176, the League won a major victory at the Battle of Legnano.

This led to the Treaty of Venice in 1177. Later, Emperor Frederick II tried to take control again. He won a battle at Cortenuova in 1237. However, the cities continued to fight him. In 1248, the Imperial side lost a battle during the Siege of Parma. This loss made it very hard for the Emperor to keep his power.

The League stayed active for many years through different leaders. It gained prestige again after Henry VI died in 1197. The group also had support from the popes. Pope Alexander III supported the cities against Frederick I. Later, Pope Gregory IX supported them against Frederick II. The League finally ended in 1250. This happened because Frederick II died that year. After he died, the Empire had much less influence in Italy. The era of the great struggle between the cities and the emperors began to fade.
