Long ago, the history of Mantua changed many times. After the Roman Empire fell, many different groups invaded the land. In the 11th century, a leader named Boniface of Canossa owned it. Later, a ruler named Matilde of Canossa lived there. In 1273, a man named Pinamonte Bonacolsi took power. His family ruled for about one hundred years. The Gonzaga family grew very powerful and wealthy. In 1530, Federico II became the first official duke. He worked with the Holy Roman Emperor, Charles V. In 1531, the family gained the March of Montferrat through marriage. They built famous places like the Palazzo Te. The family also helped music grow in a big way. The musician Claudio Monteverdi lived there for many years. He performed his work, L'Orfeo, in Mantua in 1607.

Being a great ruler was a very expensive job. The family had to sell things to pay for their court. In 1627, Vincenzo Gonzaga sold many famous paintings to Charles I of England. Eventually, the Gonzaga family line came to an end. After the death of Ferdinando Carlo Gonzaga in 1708, the land was split up. The House of Habsburg took the city of Mantua. The House of Savoy took the rest of Montferrat.
