They ruled many huge lands across Europe and the Americas. For a long time, they were the leaders of the Holy Roman Empire. They also ruled Spain and many other places. This family shaped how much of the world looked and worked. Their influence lasted from the Middle Ages into the modern era.

The family's story began with a stone fortress.

A man named Radbot built Habsburg Castle in the 1020s. This castle was in what is now Switzerland. His grandson, Otto II, was the first to use the castle name for himself. He called himself the Count of Habsburg. Later, the family moved their main power base to the city of Vienna. This change helped them become known as the House of Austria.

Many people helped the family grow through smart choices.

They used arranged marriages to connect with other important families. They also worked hard to get high jobs in the church. In 1273, a descendant named Rudolph was elected King of the Romans. Rudolph won a big fight at the Battle on the Marchfeld in 1278. This victory helped his family gain control of Austria and Styria.

At its height, the family ruled many different nations.

They were kings in Bohemia, Hungary, and Croatia. They also ruled Spain, Portugal, and Sicily. Some members even became emperors of Mexico. In the middle of the 1500s, the family split into two branches. One branch stayed in Spain, while the other stayed in Germany and Austria. They still stayed close and often married one another.

The family's long rule eventually came to an end.
