history Maturity 7-9 Next article →

The Hohenstaufen were a noble family from Germany. They rose to power in the Middle Ages. They ruled the Duchy of Swabia starting in 1079. Later, they ruled the Holy Roman Empire from 1138 to 1254.

The family took their name from Hohenstaufen Castle. This castle sat on a mountain in the Swabian Jura. The name "Staufen" actually means "chalice." This word was often used for conical hills in that area.

Historians often call them the Staufer today.

This family grew in power through many important steps. First, Duke Frederick I became a leader in 1079. He was a loyal ally to the king. His son, Duke Frederick II, took over in 1105. After a long struggle for the throne, the family won. In 1152, Frederick became both a king and an emperor.

This gave the family huge amounts of land. They ruled over parts of Germany, Italy, and Burgundy. Their empire reached its largest size between 1155 and 1268.

One of the most famous rulers was Frederick I. People called him Frederick Barbarossa because of his red beard.

He wanted to make the German monarchy very strong again. To find money, he traveled to Italy often. He fought many battles against the Pope and Italian cities. While he was away, German princes grew more powerful. They even began settling new lands in the east. This time also saw the rise of beautiful German poetry.

After Barbarossa died in 1190, his son Henry VI became leader. Henry married Princess Constance of Sicily. This marriage brought great wealth to the family.

However, Henry died in 1197 before he could pass everything down. This led to a hard time for the family. A civil war broke out between the Staufer and the Welf family. A man named Philip of Swabia tried to rule as a placeholder. He was killed in 1208, which caused even more fighting.

Finally, Frederick II became the famous emperor in 1220. He was a very bright and unusual ruler.
