Long ago, the area belonged to a tribe called the Burgundians. They arrived in Gaul during the 5th century. They lived around places like Dijon and Autun. The Frankish King Childebert I took over their land in 534. Later, the land was split many times by different kings. In 843, a division called the Partition of Verdun happened. This created a lasting split in the geography of Burgundy. This split helped shape how the duchy would eventually look.

Richard ruled many different regions like Dijonais and Nivernais. He brought law and order to his people. He also protected monks who were being chased away. His son, Rudolph, even became the King of France in 923. This showed how much power the Burgundian leaders could hold.

In 1032, a man named Robert became the duke. He started the House of Burgundy. This family was a branch of the royal Capet dynasty.
