West Francia

history Maturity 11-13 Next article →

West Francia was a kingdom that helped shape modern France. It began in the year 843 after a large empire was split up. This split happened because of the Treaty of Verdun. The empire had been ruled by the Carolingians. After the death of Louis the Pious, his three sons divided the land. The youngest son, Charles the Bald, received the western part. This new land was known as West Francia.

Making the kingdom work was a hard job for the kings. Charles the Bald had to fight for control over areas like Aquitaine. In the year 845, he signed the Treaty of Benoît-sur-Loire to settle a fight with his nephew. Later, in 870, the Treaty of Meerssen added more land to the kingdom. Charles even became the Emperor of Rome in 875. These treaties and battles helped define the borders of the land.

Over many years, the power of the kings began to fade. The kings were elected by important leaders called magnates. These leaders included both nobles and church officials. Because of this, regional dukes and nobles became much stronger. They started to rule their own areas almost like they were kings. Some regions, like Burgundy and Provence, even had their own rulers.

Life in West Francia was also shaped by outside groups. In the north, Norsemen known as Vikings arrived to settle. The kings struggled to stop these invaders from attacking. Because the kings were weak, local nobles had to lead the defense. For example, Robert of Neustria fought the Viking leader Rollo in 911. These local leaders gained a lot of power while protecting the people.

By the late 900s, the kingdom was changing into something new. The old Carolingian family lost its hold on the throne. In the year 987, the nobles elected Hugh Capet to be the king. This started a new family called the Capetian dynasty. This moment marked the end of West Francia. It was the beginning of the transition to the Kingdom of France.
