It existed during the Early Middle Ages from the year 800 to 887. This empire was ruled by a family called the Carolingians. They had been kings of the Franks since the year 751. They also became kings of the Lombards in Italy in 774. This empire was very important for European history. Some people see it as the first part of the Holy Roman Empire.

Life in the empire was shaped by many leaders and many wars. Charlemagne was a very famous ruler who led many campaigns. He often led his armies personally to grow his land. He defeated the Lombard Kingdom in 774 and made it part of his domain. He also fought many wars against the Saxons from 772 to 804. Charlemagne even fought the Avars and won.

His rule was a time of constant movement and change. He made Aachen his main home in the land of Francia.

Charlemagne's rise to power was a major turning point. In the year 800, Pope Leo III crowned him Roman emperor. This happened because Charlemagne provided political protection for the Pope.

Before him, a leader named Charles Martel was very powerful. Martel earned his nickname "the Hammer" after a big victory. He defended Christian Europe at the Battle of Tours in 732. Later, his son Pepin III became king in 741. Charlemagne then took control after his brother Carloman I died.

After Charlemagne died in 814, his son Louis the Pious became emperor. Louis was very interested in religion and learning. He worked hard to restore many old monasteries. He also helped people learn how to read and sing.

However, his time as leader was very difficult. His own sons fought him in a long civil war. This struggle for power led to the Treaty of Verdun in 843. This treaty divided the empire into three separate kingdoms. One part helped create France and another helped create Germany.

We can still see traces of this era in many ways. The empire had between 10 and 20 million people living in it.

People used Latin for all official writing and laws. Even though the empire broke apart, the family name remained important. The empire eventually fractured completely after the year 887. Different kings ruled the eastern and western lands. Some ruled through the old family line, while others were chosen by nobles. This era helped shape the map of Europe we see today.
