He also worked to change how the church was run. He asked a man named Benedict of Aniane to help make rules for religious houses. This helped make sure that many different places followed the same important rules. He even established a new custom for how kings should be crowned in Reims.

In the year 817, a wooden gallery in Aachen collapsed. Many people died in this accident. This event made Louis think about the future of his family. He decided to write a special plan to decide who would rule next. This plan was called the Ordinatio Imperii. He wanted to make sure his empire stayed united even after he was gone. He hoped this would prevent fighting among his many children.

Louis had three main sons named Lothair, Pepin, and Louis.

His plan gave the most power to his eldest son, Lothair. The other two sons were given their own lands to rule. However, the plan caused many problems for the family. Louis later tried to change the plan to help a younger son named Charles. This caused his older sons to become very angry with him. The empire was soon torn apart by civil wars between the brothers.

Even with these hard times, Louis tried to keep order. He faced many challenges from his own relatives and his sons. One difficult time involved his nephew, Bernard of Italy. Louis punished Bernard for trying to be independent. Later in his life, Louis worked hard to restore peace to his lands. He died in the year 840. His life shows how hard it can be to rule a huge empire. He faced different problems than his father, but he always tried to lead.
