Charles the Bald was a famous king from a long time ago.

He was the grandson of a great leader named Charlemagne. His father was a man named Louis the Pious. Charles was the youngest son in his family. This meant his older brothers already had their own lands. He had to work very hard to find his own place.

He eventually became the king of West Francia. This land was the start of what we now call France.

Life as a king was often a very hard job. Charles had to deal with many different fights. He fought against people called the Bretons in the west. He also had to defend his land from Viking invaders. The Vikings attacked the city of Paris many times. Charles sometimes had to pay them money to go away. To stop them, he built strong, fortified bridges over rivers.

He also created a better army using horses for speed.

Much of Charles's life was spent in family struggles. His brothers, Lothair I and Louis the German, were often at odds. After their father died, the brothers fought many civil wars. In the year 843, they signed the Treaty of Verdun. This treaty divided the huge empire into three parts. Charles received the western third of the land. This was a very important moment in history. It helped shape the countries of Europe we see today.

Charles was a very busy leader with many titles. He ruled West Francia from the year 843 to 877. He also became the king of Italy in 875. For a short time, he was even an emperor. He used a special motto about renewing the empire.

He was also known for being a man of learning. He liked books and worked closely with the church. He even sent letters to Pope Hadrian II about his rights.

Even his nickname is a bit of a mystery. People called him "the Bald." Some think he was actually very hairy. Others think the name was a joke about his land. At first, he did not have much land at all. He lived a long life and had many children. His son, Louis the Stammerer, took over after him. Charles died in 877 while traveling through the mountains.
