Lothair's life was filled with many rules and duties. In 817, his father wrote a special law called the Ordinatio Imperii. This law named Lothair as the main heir. It said he would be the leader over his younger brothers. His brothers were Pepin I and Louis the German. Lothair also helped govern the land of Bavaria. In 823, he received the royal crown of Italy in Rome. He even made laws to help govern the people in Italy.

History shows that Lothair had a very difficult time with his family. He often fought with his father and his brothers. These fights were about who should rule the empire. In 830, Lothair and his brothers even removed their father from power. Later, in 840, his father died. Lothair wanted to rule the entire empire by himself. However, his brothers Charles and Louis did not agree. This led to a long war between the brothers.

There were many important dates and places during these wars. A big battle happened at Fontenay-en-Puisaye in 841. Lothair lost that battle and had to flee to Aachen. Eventually, the brothers met on an island in the Saône river. In 843, they signed the Treaty of Verdun to make peace. This treaty gave Lothair a long strip of land. It went from the North Sea down to the Mediterranean Sea. This land included places like Alsace, Burgundy, and Provence.

Lothair's life ended after many years of ruling. In 855, he became very sick. He decided to give his lands to his three sons. His sons were Louis II, Lothair II, and Charles. This division of land was called the Treaty of Prüm. Lothair went to a monastery in Prüm on September 23. He died just six days later. His family and his lands helped shape the future of Europe. His actions helped lead to the lands we now call France and Germany.
