history Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Lotharingia was a special land that existed a long time ago. It was a kingdom in Europe during the middle ages. This region lived between other strong lands. Because of its location, many kings wanted to rule it. The name Lotharingia means "the land of Lothair." It came from the name of its first king, Lothair II.

This kingdom started because of a large empire called the Carolingian Empire. A leader named Louis the Pious had three sons. After he died, the empire was split into parts. In 855, a treaty at a place called Prüm divided the land again. Lothair II received the middle part of the empire. This land was a long strip of territory. It stretched from the North Sea all the way to Italy.

History shows that Lotharingia changed many times. In 870, the Treaty of Meerssen split the kingdom into two pieces. One piece went to West Francia and the other to East Francia. Later, the land was joined back together by the Treaty of Ribemont in 880. By the year 903, it was no longer a kingdom. Instead, it became a duchy. A duchy is a land ruled by a person called a duke.

Lotharingia covered many places we know today. It included the region of Lorraine in France. It also included Luxembourg and most of Belgium. Some parts of the Netherlands and Germany were there too. Between 959 and 965, the land was split into two duchies. The northern part was called Lower Lotharingia. The southern part was called Upper Lotharingia.

The story of Lotharingia connects to the world we see now. The name of the land changed as years passed. People began to use the Latin name to create new words. This led to the name "Lorraine" used in France today. Some parts of the land became part of the German Empire in 1871. Later, these areas became part of France again. Even though the kingdom is gone, its name lives on in many places.
