East Francia

history Maturity 9-11 Next article →

East Francia was a kingdom that grew from a much larger empire. This empire was ruled by the Carolingian family. In the year 843, the empire was split into three parts. This happened because of the Treaty of Verdun.

Three sons of Louis the Pious divided the lands among themselves. The eldest son, Lothair I, kept the middle part. Charles the Bald took the west. Louis the German received the eastern lands. These lands would eventually become the Kingdom of Germany.

Life in East Francia was very diverse. Most people living there were not Franks. They belonged to different Germanic tribes. These groups had their own customs and laws. They also spoke different languages, like German or Slavic. Some people lived in the Duchy of Saxony. Others lived in Bavaria, Alamannia, or Thuringia. The kingdom also included cities like Speyer, Worms, and Mainz.

Because the empire was split, the kings had to start over. Louis the German did not get the old crown jewels. He had to create new ways to show he was king. Around the year 900, they wrote a special ceremony for coronations. One part was called Recognition. In this part, the people would shout to show they supported the leader. This helped the king connect with his people.

Over time, the way leaders were chosen changed. In 911, the nobles stopped picking leaders from the old Carolingian family. Instead, they elected Conrad I as their king. He was a duke from Franconia. It was a hard job to lead the different dukes. Later, in 919, Henry I was elected. He was a leader from the Saxons. Henry worked very hard to make the kingdom strong and stable.

Henry's work helped his son, Otto I, reach even greater heights. Otto became a very important leader in Europe. In the year 962, he was crowned Emperor in Rome. This event started the era of the Holy Roman Empire. The story of East Francia shows how small pieces can grow into huge nations. It connects the old Frankish empire to the history of modern Germany and France.
