Austrasia was a famous historical region in the northeastern part of the Frankish State.

It sat near several large rivers like the Meuse, Moselle, and Rhine. The name likely comes from an old word meaning "eastern land."

This area included lands that used to be part of the Roman Empire. It also reached into areas that the Romans never ruled. Today, this land covers parts of many countries like Germany, France, and Belgium.

This land was ruled by different groups of people over many years. First, the Merovingian kings held power in the region. Later, the Carolingian dynasty took control of the area. These leaders often shared power with other family members. Sometimes, they even ruled different sub-kingdoms at the same time. This meant that one large state could be split into smaller pieces. These pieces were often ruled by different kings from the same family.

History shows that the kings of Austrasia often faced hard times. After King Clovis I died in 511, his four sons split his lands. One son named Theuderic I received the lands that became Austrasia. For a long time, Austrasia fought with its neighbor, Neustria. These two kingdoms fought almost constantly for many years. Queens like Brunhilda and Fredegund were even part of these struggles. Eventually, a leader named Chlothar II brought the kingdoms back together.

New types of leaders called mayors of the palace also appeared. These officials helped act as a bridge between the king and the people. One family, the Pippinids, became very strong in Austrasia. They eventually took the throne away from the Merovingian kings. Another famous leader, Charles Martel, gained support from the Austrasians. His family, the Carolingians, used Austrasia as their main base of power. This helped them lead the whole Frankish realm for a time.

In the year 843, a big agreement called the Treaty of Verdun changed everything. This treaty divided the land into three separate parts. The eastern part of Austrasia eventually became known as Franconia. The central parts were often called Lotharingia after a king named Lothair II. These names helped people describe the different areas as time went on. Even though the borders moved, the history of Austrasia remains a key part of Europe.
