Neustria

history Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Neustria was a famous land in the west during the Early Middle Ages. It was a part of the large Frankish Kingdom. The name likely means "new western land."

At first, this land was very large. It stretched from the Loire River to the Silva Carbonaria forest. Important cities like Paris, Orléans, Tours, and Soissons were part of it. It was different from the eastern land called Austrasia. These two parts of the Frankish Kingdom often had many rivalries. They fought for power for more than two hundred years.

History shows that Neustria changed many times. Before it was Neustria, it was the Kingdom of Soissons. A leader named Syagrius ruled that Roman state. In the year 486, King Clovis I defeated him at the Battle of Soissons. After that, the Franks took control of the land. Later, the land became smaller and sat between the Seine and Loire rivers. This smaller area was called the regnum Neustriae. It was a subkingdom within the much larger Carolingian Empire.

Powerful leaders shaped the story of this western land. Queen Fredegund and King Clotaire II were part of a bitter war for power. Later, the Carolingian family took control of the empire. Pippin the Short became a king after the Merovingian kings lost their authority. In 790, Charlemagne gave the kingdom to his son, Charles the Younger. The royal court for this kingdom was often at Le Mans. The kings in Neustria had a very important job. They had to defend the Frankish lands from the Bretons.

There were many important dates and names in Neustria. In 748, the brothers Pepin the Short and Carloman gave twelve counties to Grifo. This area was also called the Duchy of Maine. In 843, the Treaty of Verdun helped create the West Frankish kingdom. This kingdom included Neustria and Aquitaine. In 861, King Charles the Bald created the Marches of Neustria. These were special border lands. He appointed officials called wardens or margraves to rule them. One march was against the Bretons, and another was against the Vikings.

Eventually, the way people ruled Neustria changed again. In 911, Robert I became the leader of the marches. His family was known as the Capetians. They ruled the area until the year 987. That year, Hugh Capet was elected as king. By this time, the name Neustria was no longer used as a political name. The Viking and Breton raids had also passed. The land had changed so much that the old name faded away.
