Long ago, people lived on the river plain. They farmed the land and raised animals. These early people lived there as far back as 4500 BC. Later, a Gallic tribe called the Parisii made a settlement. They built houses using wood and clay. Some people think they lived on an island in the river. Others found a large village in a place called Nanterre.

In the first century BC, the Romans arrived in the area. They fought a big battle with the Parisii tribe. The Gallic leaders even burned their own bridges to stop the Romans. After the Romans won, they built a new city. They named this Roman town Lutetia. They built a main street called the Cardo Maximus. This street ran from the hills down to the river.

Things changed when Germanic tribes began to invade. The people had to build walls to stay safe. They used stones from old buildings to make these walls. In the fourth century, the Roman leader Julian moved the capital of Gaul to the city. Later, in the fifth century, a new group of kings took over. These were the Merovingian kings. They made the town their capital. The name Lutetia slowly changed into Paris.
