He served as a bishop in a place called Lutetia. Today, we know this city as Paris. Denis lived during the third century. Some stories say he came from Italy to Gaul. He was sent to help grow the faith there. He worked alongside two companions named Rusticus and Eleutherius.

These three men became very important to the history of the region.

Denis and his friends were very successful at teaching their faith. This made some local priests feel worried about their own followers. Because of this, a Roman governor had the missionaries arrested. They were held in prison for a long time. Eventually, they were executed on a high hill in Paris. This hill is known today as Montmartre.

Some people believe the name comes from the Latin words for "Martyrs' Mountain."

A very famous story tells us that Denis was a cephalophore. This is a special word for a person who carries their own head. The legend says that after he was beheaded, Denis picked up his head. He then walked for several miles while preaching a sermon.

This story is found in many old books like the *Golden Legend*. It is a very unique part of his history. Many artists have tried to paint this amazing scene.

After he died, people built a small shrine at the site. This shrine grew into a large abbey and a famous basilica.

The Basilica of Saint-Denis became the burial place for many kings of France. Even the great king Dagobert I built a royal basilica there. Over time, Denis became the patron saint of both France and Paris. He is also remembered as one of the Fourteen Holy Helpers. People still celebrate his feast day on October 9.

Many people have sometimes confused Denis with another person named Dionysius. This other Dionysius was a famous follower of the Apostle Paul.

For hundreds of years, some writers thought they were the same person. However, most historians today say this is not true. Artists also had funny problems when painting Denis. They had to decide how to show his halo. Some put the halo where his head used to be. Others showed him carrying the halo in his hands.
