She was born around the year 474 in a place called Burgundy. Her life was filled with both great importance and very hard times. Many members of her family faced violent struggles for power. Despite these troubles, she became a famous figure in history. Today, many people look to her as a saint. She is known as the patron saint of the lame in Normandy.

People also call her the patron saint of Les Andelys.

Clotilde's life changed when she married King Clovis I around 492 or 493. Clovis was the very first king of the Franks. He was drawn to her because of her wisdom and her beauty. At that time, many Germanic tribes followed a belief called Arianism. Clotilde, however, was a Catholic. She worked hard to encourage Clovis to join her faith. One famous story says an angel gave her three white lilies while she prayed. Because of this, Clovis later put lilies on his battle shield.

This helped lead the Franks to become Catholics for many centuries.

Clotilde and Clovis had five children together. They had four sons named Clodomir, Childebert, Clotaire, and Ingomir. They also had one daughter who was named after her mother. The lives of her children were often filled with political conflict. After Clovis died in 511, Clotilde spent 34 years as a widow. She chose to leave the world of politics behind. Instead, she moved to a place called Tours to live a quiet life. She stayed near the tomb of Saint Martin of Tours.

During her later years, Clotilde focused on helping others. She was known to pray, fast, and weep for others. She gave almost everything she owned to people who were poor. Clotilde also spent much of her time building religious places. She built churches, monasteries, and convents in several locations. One important building was the Basilica of the Holy Apostles. This building later became the Church of Sainte-Geneviève. She and Clovis had built it as a special place to honor Saint Genevieve.

Many people have kept Clotilde's memory alive through art and stories. She is often shown in paintings as a praying queen or a nun. Some artists even show her with a crown on her head. In the town of Les Andelys, people tell a story about a miracle. They say that while building a convent, water from a fountain tasted like wine. This helped many pilgrims visit the area to seek healing. Clotilde died on June 3, 545. Her feast day is celebrated on that same day every year.
