Pepin of Herstal was a very powerful leader in a place called Francia. He lived a long time ago during the 7th and 8th centuries. Pepin held the title of Mayor of the Palace. Pepin grew his power by winning many important battles. In the year 687, he won the Battle of Tertry in a place called Vermandois. This victory helped him take control of Neustria and Burgundy. He became the mayor for all three Frankish kingdoms at once. After that, he focused on other lands like Germany. He brought the Alemanni, the Frisians, and the Franconians under his rule.

His leadership changed how trade worked in Europe. Between 690 and 692, the city of Utrecht fell to the Franks. This gave Pepin control over trade paths near the Rhine river. These paths led to the North Sea. He also helped a missionary named Willibrord do his work. This helped spread new religious ideas in Germany. Pepin was a busy leader who changed many things for his people.

Pepin had a very large and busy family life. He married a woman named Plectrude around the year 670. They had two sons named Drogo and Grimoald. Pepin also had a son named Childebrand. He had another son named Charles Martel with a woman named Alpaida. Before he died, Pepin chose his young grandson Theudoald to be his heir. He did this because Plectrude helped convince him to do so.

Pepin died on December 16, 714, in a place called Jupille. He was 79 years old when he passed away. His death led to a big disagreement in his family. His son Charles Martel did not want the young grandson to rule. Charles was a very strong soldier and won many battles. A civil war lasted for more than three years after Pepin died. In the end, Charles Martel won and became the new leader. This family line eventually led to the famous leader Charlemagne.
