His mother was Hedwige of Saxony.

Hugh grew up in a world that looked different from today. The kings did not call themselves kings of France yet. Instead, they used the title "King of the Franks."

The land they ruled was much smaller than modern France. Many parts of the land were ruled by other local leaders. Some areas like Normandy and Burgundy were very independent. Hugh had to work hard to gain his own power. In 956, his father died when Hugh was about fifteen. His mother helped look after his lands while he grew up.

Life was not easy for the young Hugh. Other powerful nobles tried to take his land. He had to deal with many different leaders and wars. In 978, King Lothair went to war with the German Emperor, Otto II. Hugh helped King Lothair by leading a relief army.

Church leaders also helped Hugh rise to power. Adalberon was the Archbishop of Reims. He was a very important leader in the church.

Adalberon and a scholar named Gerbert worked together. They wanted a strong leader for the land. They thought Hugh was the best person for the job. Hugh also supported the work of many monasteries. This made the church leaders trust him more than other people. They believed he would be a good and steady leader.

In 987, a big change happened for the kingdom. The last king of the old Carolingian family died. The leaders chose Hugh Capet to be the new king.
