Many stories tell of how he lived his life. One legend says he was a giant man. He wanted to serve the greatest king in the world. At first, he tried to serve the devil. But he saw that the devil feared Christ. So, he went to find Christ instead. A hermit told him how to serve. The hermit said he could help people cross a dangerous river.

One famous story happens during a river crossing. A small child asked Christopher to carry him across the water. During the trip, the river became very swollen and strong. The child felt as heavy as lead on his shoulders. Christopher found the task very difficult to finish. When they reached the other side, the child revealed himself as Christ. The child said Christopher was carrying the one who made the world.

History shows that people have honored him for a long time. A church was built for him in Chalcedon by the year 452.

Some stories say he lived during the time of the Roman emperor Decius. In the Eastern Church, art sometimes shows him with a dog's head. This is a different way of showing his legendary nature. People in the West often see him as a giant with a staff. He is a very important figure in both Eastern and Western traditions.

Today, many people still use his name and image. People wear small medals around their necks or on bracelets. Some people keep small statues in their vehicles for safety. Many places around the world are named after him. This includes Saint Christopher's Island in the Caribbean. It also includes cities like Havana, Cuba, and Riga, Latvia.
