Sinterklaas is a very famous legendary figure. He is based on a real person named Saint Nicholas. This man was a Greek bishop from Myra. Myra is located in what is now Turkey.

He lived from the year 270 to 343. Many people call him "De Goede Sint." Some even call him "De Goedheiligman." This name means "good marriage man." It refers to his reputation for helping people find good partners. He is a very important figure in many traditions. He is also a source for the famous Santa Claus.

Sinterklaas looks like a very stately man. He has white hair and a long beard. He wears a long red cape over a white robe. He also wears a red hat called a mitre.

He carries a gold staff called a crosier. This staff has a fancy curled top. He also carries a large red book. This book is used to record if children were good or naughty. He is said to arrive from Spain on a steamboat. He often rides a white horse through the streets. In the Netherlands, the horse has had names like Amerigo and Ozosnel. In Belgium, the horse is named "Slecht weer vandaag."

Sinterklaas has helpers known as Zwarte Piet.

These helpers wear colorful clothes from the 16th century. They often wear a lace collar and a feathered cap. They carry bags filled with candy for children. One tradition says they toss coins to help people. For a long time, people said their faces were black because they were from Spain. Now, many people say the dark color is soot from chimneys.

This is why they are sometimes called "soot-smudge Petes." There has been much debate about how these helpers should look. Some people feel the old way is linked to slavery. Because of this, many cities now use the soot-smudge style.

People celebrate this feast in many different ways. In the Netherlands, the main day is December 5. This is called Pakjesavond, or "packages evening." In Belgium and other places, it is December 6.

The arrival usually happens in mid-November. Sinterklaas arrives at a seaside town by boat. In Belgium, he always arrives in the city of Antwerp. In the Netherlands, the port changes every year. Children celebrate by leaving a shoe by the fireplace. They put hay and water in the shoe for the horse. The next morning, they find treats in their shoes.

There are many tasty treats to enjoy during this time. Children might find a chocolate letter with their name on it.

They also eat small cookies called kruidnoten or pepernoten. Other treats include speculaas and mandarin oranges. Some people even eat marzipan figures or chocolate coins.

The connection to Spain might come from these oranges. A poem from 1810 says he goes to Spain to get them. This tradition brings many people together every year. It is a time for gifts, songs, and sweets.
